I grew up in Preston and always loved visiting the City of Manchester, so it is a pleasure to be studying for my Part II here. I studied at the University of Newcastle for my Part I and worked in both the private and public sector for my work placements over two years at _space architecture and Blackpool Council. I joined msap as a reaction against the tendency of architects, or architecture students, to avert to playing formalistic "language games" (to quote Manfredo Tafuri). I am interested in the synthesis between the school of architecture and the city, and therefore the opportunity to work on real projects rather than work disconnected from the community and real issues. I believe that truly sustainable architecture can only be achieved if it considers the social and political, as well as the functional and environmental needs. Whilst working, I am fuelled by the music of Gilles Peterson and vast amounts of tea.
